Can you please introduce yourself…
AWE AWE my name is POLIZEI, QST193EDS…
When did you start doing graffiti and how did it come about?
Since 2004, at the Battle of the Year in Cape Town. I went there to see Bboys flexing, back in the days when all I used to do was breakdance. It all changed after I saw at least twenty artists painting walls. That day at the shopping centre I saw FAITH47, FALKO, TOE, WEALZ , MAK1ONE, PLAY and NOKS and some other shit that wasn’t really talking to me as much as the rest. This was the day it all started…
Tell us about your name. Where does it come from and does it hold any specific meaning?
Po po, poliz, polis, polisei – It’s basically “police” in every language I can draw. POLIZEI is German and that is what I am so it kinda all fitted together, and there are more letters to play with I suppose… Up until one or two hiccups, I was like an innocent schoolboy walking home from a friends house.
What does graffiti mean to you?
Expression of my self! I love art! I love bombing! I love GRAFFITI… I plain down live, sleep, walk and talk graffiti (even when I’m on the toilet). It’s on my mind all day.
You’re part of the newer generation of graffiti writers. Who in the Durban scene was most influential to you?
Hmm, when I began to notice graffitti in Durban, it was all about bombing to most writers here and all I saw was MIZN2KIL, ENOHELP, OPTONE – the 1,2 bosses of the town, up in every hood, ballies were everywhere…
Tell us about your crew…
Quest boys is like blood in the veins. Every brother I’ve known before pen to wall tactics. 193 is a number to my name, and EDS is the new crew I’m in. I’m so grateful to be putting up EDS, these men are burning Spain, especially INCA - main man got heavy style…
You paint awesome characters and letters. Which do you prefer painting?
How do you develop your style and where do you see your graffiti style in the future?
Drawdrawdrawdrawdraw… Far from what i know now.
What other arts are you interested in?
I make canvases and beats and I’ve just started staining people with my works. Amped to get the needle tech down (tattoos).
Who are some of your favourite graffiti artists? (Local and international)
AROE, RESO, LIME, GRIS, BOMK, SMASH137, INCA, HOT, ROID, DOES.
RASTY, TOE, SHURE, SETH, FAITH47, DISK, CROS, STOP ,FIYA1, GIFT.
What are your views on the graffiti scene in Durban?
It’s hard to get things done here sometimes. It’s a bit slow now and then, but this year things are happening…
What do you think of current graffiti trends, if any, and where do you think graffiti is going as an art form in today’s society?
Graff belongs on walls and books not wine bottles and shit – exploited in one way or another. Bill Trump has money for you to spraypaint a cheetah in his bedroom…
What is your favourite graffiti piece that you’ve painted?
Hmm, I dont know. It’s not done yet. Coming soon…
