NEWS \\ New works painted in Kliptown, Soweto

Last week, the suburb of Kliptown, the oldest residential district in Johannesburg’s South Western Townships (Soweto), saw a creative influx as Redbull’s Amaphiko Academy was taking place between 4 and 13 April, 2014.

Running alongside the main event, graffiti artists including Falko and Rasty painted various walls throughout the community. Renowned graffiti photographer, Martha Cooper, who was a guest speaker and mentor at the conference, was also present, snapping away at the festivities. This was Martha’s third visit to South Africa - last year she and stencil artist, Lady Aiko (USA), stayed with the Soweto Art Residency and also worked in and around the Kliptown area.

Other graffiti artists who put up new artworks throughout last week include Riot, Trips, Drake, Tower, Kasi, Ekse, and Mundano from Brazil. More pictures to follow.

EVENT \\ Converse Clash Wall

The basic concept of the Clash Wall is simple:
“Tweet your creative ideas to a standby graffiti artist to turn your digital idea into a graffiti reality.”

Here’s what went down at the wall in Cape Town last month, with artists Skubalisto and Migo…

The Jo’burg clash is going to be even more epic as Rasty will take on an 53m wall wall in Braamfontein on 28 & 29 March. The wall is at South Point, corner of Melle and Jorissen streets. Remember that your ideas can become a reality - Tweet any word or idea with the hashtags #ClashWall #JHB, and follow @Converse_Africa to keep up with the progress. This is gonna rock!

EVENT \\ Exhibition: Rasty VS Veronika

A collaborative painting installation featuring two of Johannesburg’s most respected street artists. Painting in a wide variety of styles and mediums, these two prolific painters pay homage to the origins of “street art”. Blurring the boundaries between public and private spaces, as well as street art and contemporary fine art. This is one not to be missed.

PICS \\ Once Upon A Town: First Look

As mentioned in a previous post, Once Upon A Town is the new “splitpiece” graffiti project by Cape Town’s Falko One. This time he brought Rasty along and the two have aimed to paint 40 murals in ten days to create ten splitpieces!

Although it has been raining quite a bit in the town of Pella in the Western Cape, the two should be finished off very soon. We can’t wait to see the completed splitpieces because the murals are looking hella tight on their own…

Before I Die: A Street Art Project (South Africa)

Before I Die is an interactive street art project that has been done in other parts of the world and is now in South Africa. The project is a study of peoples aspirations and was originally done by Candy Chang as the basis for her graduate thesis. The words “Before I die I want to _” are stenciled onto the wall and chalk is left at the site for passer-by’s to write with.

Graffiti art by Rasty and Clark.

The project will be up until April 21st as part of the City of Gold Urban Art Festival and is located at the corner of Kruger Street and Fox Street in the Maboneng Precinct in downtown Johannesburg. Follow the project on Facebook HERE.

EVENT \\ City of Gold 2012 Exhibition and Opening

City of Gold Urban Art Festival 2012 opens this Sunday (15 April) at 4pm – 9pm at Afronova Gallery in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

The festival will kick off with an exhibition featuring local and international graffiti artists. This will be a chance for the public to meet the artists, and get a sneak peak as to what the week of collaborations will bring. The exhibition will be the first of its kind in South Africa, bringing together highly respected artists from around the world and pioneers of the local graffiti scene. Featuring a broad spectrum of artists and styles, audiences will experience the dynamic and versatile nature of this misunderstood art form.

The exhibition will be open to the public every day for the week of the festival (10am - 5pm) closing with a walkabout on Saturday 21 April at 12 Noon.
