EVENT \\ Exhibition: Powerfully Pointless

Durban based fine artist Dane Stops presents his first solo exhibition in Johannesburg, “Powerfully Pointless”.

7 - 27 September 2017
Priest Gallery and Espressobar
142 Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood

This body of work explores ideas surrounding the filtration of social issues through social media and associated devices, with specific reference to the South African landscape. Social media has created a culture of hands off activism. It allows people to voice opinions (educated and/or not) on issues through tweets, status updates, hashtags and shares, in the safety of their own home.

Social media has the ability to switch between serious and playful topics, often even a combination of the two at the speed of a double click. It combines things in extremes, from the frivolity of selfies to intense current issues. It is this dynamic that is both powerful and pointless that I am most interested in.

The work on show makes use of a number of traditional drawing media, such as pencil, colour pencil and pen.
